Fees and tax

What things cost

Listing is free. When something sells, the seller pays a small fee and the buyer pays a locker fee and sales tax. You see every number before you agree to anything.

Sellers5% of the price

Never less than $0.50. Storefronts pay 8%, because a storefront comes with its own page, unit and tools. Listing costs nothing.

BuyersA locker fee, plus tax

The locker fee pays for checking the item against its listing and keeping it in a locked locker until you collect it. It goes up with the price, in steps.

Free thingsFree

Anything given away has no fees and no tax. It goes on the Shelf and is collected the same way.

The locker fee

Items $0 to $9.99$1.00
Items $10 to $24.99$1.75
Items $25 to $49.99$2.50
Items $50 and up5%, never more than $15

A flat fee on small things, because checking and storing a $6 tee is the same work as a $60 jacket. A percentage on bigger things, capped, so an expensive item is not punished.

What the buyer pays and what the seller keeps, worked out exactly the way the checkout does it.

Where $46.01 goes

A $40 item. The buyer pays $46.01. This is where every cent of it ends up.

Seller $38.00
Sales tax to Texas $3.51
Card processing (Stripe) $1.63
Showroom $2.87

The school does not take a cut. Showroom's part pays for the lockers, the people who check every item, and running the site.

Sales tax

Texas requires a marketplace to collect sales tax on what sells through it, so Showroom adds it at checkout and pays it to the state. Sellers do not have to do anything about tax.

The rate is 8.25%, the combined state and local rate where the school is. It is charged on the item and the locker fee, and shown on the receipt.

Free items have no tax. Refunded orders get their tax back.

The lowest price

$3. Below that the fees would cost more than the item, so give it away instead.

Payouts for under 18s

Stripe needs an adult to own a payout account, so a parent or guardian sets it up with you. It takes about five minutes.
